Got any tips?

I was asked this on good old Google. Here I am, if you want to see what I’m up to over there. The poster in question was doing that thing of celebrating with a sad face. I’m sure he won’t mind me quoting him….

kindlejoy the feeling you get when see your rating jump 100,000 on the amazon rating billboard. kindlesigh the feeling you get when you watch it slowly slip back to #300,000

Especially if you all go and look at his book: The Dragon and The Crow (Magickless).

Earthlink: ImpactI commented on his post, because I’m just that kind of person. I’m a bit random, but I’ll jump in and say Hi, offer to share what I can. One of my books, Earthlink: Impact hit 10,000 in the overall ranking yesterday, and was around #17 in one of the smaller charts: Kindle store> Books> Fiction> Metaphysical & Visionary.

That’s a fantastic number! I’m so proud of it, and I told him so. He was suitably impressed.

TB asked, “any tips?”

You know sometimes, just now and then, the words flow and you read them back and think, Oh Yes! I just had to blog it…. and expand it into a larger ramble. Make of it what you will, and take from it what you feel fits for you.

You see, although promotion and marketing aren’t my strongest areas, there are some things that just make sense. TB only has a single book out, and it only has a single review of 3 stars. I’m not sure if it’s a good book, but I’ve got the sample so I’ll read that later. But, before I even look at that sample, there are things that can be done to help improve the look and feel of that page. Read More…

What if….

My favourite phrase, ever.

“What if…”

what ifIt’s a brilliant pair of words, it opens up so many possibilities. I just love it.

That tiny little phrase opens doors and makes the imagination spin off in all sorts of interesting directions. I’m sure you’ve played the game too. Even on a day to day level it makes you think, makes you wonder. What if I don’t bother getting up? What if I try something different for dinner? What if I learn something new? What if this or that happens?

Then there are the more day dreamish What if’s and those are what really spark my imagination.

If someone disappeared, what if they didn’t just run away? What if they were abducted? What if they went willingly and then ended up trapped?

What if magic was real? What if we could get to another world at the flick of a switch? What if aliens are visiting us but we just don’t see them?

What if I write a book? Or several….

What if, is dreams, flights of fancy and talking to yourself. For me, What if sparks fantasy, space travel and adventure. For others it creates romantic walks on moonlit beaches, or car chases and narrow escapes.

It’s the most incredible key to the door of imagination.

What if you let your imagination loose today?

It seems that Lily isn’t quite done with me yet.

The Portal Between opens with Lily living in our world and she appears to be in her mid thirties. She lives in an old farmhouse, with her son, Andrew, that she claimed had been in her family for several hundred years (The Map and The Stone, and The Portal Sundered.)

We know she has a sister, Heather, who is mentioned in The Portal Between and named in Child of the Portal, and we found out that she was Mistress of the land beyond the portals but she never shared the name she gave that land and she didn’t talk about her childhood much either. Read More…

Welcome home, Lads.

Today I saw a soldier cry.

He was marching, with his regiment, eyes front and proud, with tears rolling down his face. Read More…

Goodbye, my friend.

I don’t often post personal stuff in here but this has been running round in my head for a while.

A few years ago, around the time I was writing the first Portal series book, I was a frequent visitor on a number of internet chat sites. There were a few of us who were there most days. We were from all over the world, so most of us have never met in person. But that doesn’t make the feeling of belonging any less. Many of us were having a tough time in our lives and we were there for each other at stupid o’clock. When one of us needed to talk there was invariably someone online who would listen.

Over time we drifted away from the chat boards, went our separate ways and some of the boards closed down, some became internet troll homes, and some just became so quiet that we stopped popping in to them. A small handful of those people, I have stayed in touch with via facebook, email and other avenues. Some, I feel have become proper friends, even if we’ve never met face to face.

Recently I got a fit of, “Whatever happened to…” and I went in search of some of those friends. One I found who hadn’t moved on, was still the same person wandering about cyberspace looking for someone to lean on. One I found happy and content, having fought her demons and won.

But there was one I couldn’t find and that sharp edge of concern was there. I looked harder, I sought out mutual friends and old haunts, and there was no sign.

Eventually I found someone who’d found some evidence that she’d committed suicide about a year after the group we’d been part of drifted apart.

Maybe we should have stayed in touch, maybe she wouldn’t have done that if we, as a group, hadn’t drifted apart. Maybe there’s something we could have said, could have done.

Maybe not. We’ll never know.

I hope you found some peace, my friend, I hope you got the reunion you hoped for.

Who’s in charge?

With thanks to Nina Pelletier (found on Google+)

Today’s post is a challenge, particularly to any readers who are also authors, but anyone can play if they want to.

Prompt: word limit 500. Choose one of your characters, and tell us a story that has them describe YOU as an author by using the characters voice to let us know a little bit about both of you.

My Adaptation: If you’re not a writer and want to play then how about your favourite book/film character describing you as a fan of theirs? How would they feel about being watched by you?

I’ll add mine in the comments….

We lost a fish…

Today I was meant to be mixing work with family time.

That really didn’t work out.

Shall I tell you about my day?

We’d planned to get some fish for my lad’s new tank. He’s never had fish before and never been allowed a pet of any sort in his room.  So we’ve spent the past week setting up the tank, making sure the filter and pump are working, that the plants are happy and that the water is going to not kill any fish we put in.

Today was the day for fish. Read More…

I write, therefore I am.

“Why do you write?”

I’ve lost count of the number of times I get asked that. I often shrug and say, “because I can.” Or, “Why do you breathe?” There’s no easy answer.

But, why do I offer my writing for you to read? That’s a whole different question.

I do that because I am no shrinking violet, I do that because I want, demand, that my voice be heard. I do that because I love engaging with people, love watching people and I bask in the feedback that I get, yes, even the not so positive as well. I love it all. After all, I want my creation to spark a reaction from you. Read More…

It’s time to make a final decision on the cover for the ebook edition of Child of the Portal, the final book in the Portal series.

Monk Haven, Pembrokeshire. I found a simply stunning image on facebook, amongst the pages of people I’m connected with there. This original image was a photograph taken by Helen Noble, at Monk Haven, St Ishmaels, Pembrokeshire. Helen has managed to capture something magical, it caught my eye and I fell in love….

Thankfully Helen has kindly allowed me to use the photo for the cover. Read More…

Bogged down

I’m drowning… in paperwork, in detail and nitty gritty, in car hunting and dealing with life.

Sometimes it happens this way and the creation of new plots, places and characters goes on hold. Read More…
